The Wrightsville & Sunhill RR was chartered on December 22, 1883 to construct a railroad from Wrightsville to Sunhill, Georgia. Five days later the charter was amended changing the name to the Wrightsville & Tennille RR. Construction began on January 17, 1884 and was completed by 1886. The W&T's original trackage began at Tennille and ran 17.5 miles to connect with the terminal of the Dublin & Wrightsville RR(chartered on 1/12/86, Wrightsville to Oconee River oposite Dublin) at Wrightsville, Ga. On December 10, 1886 the W&T RR acquired the 18 mile D&W RR. The Central of Georgia RR furnished the rails and ties in exchange for stock in the fledging railroad and thus gained control.
In 1891 a swing-bridge was put across the Oconee and trains were able to terminate at Dublin and also connect with the Empire & Dublin RR which was owned by the Empire lumber Co. The E&PRR was reorganized on 10/8/91 as the Oconee & Western Railroad and was extended Dublin to Hawkinsville a distance of 38 miles. At this point the W&TRR connected with the Sandersville RR, Augusta Southern and the Central of Georgia at Tennille and Brewton and with the O&WRR at Dublin.
The W&TRR acquired the Ocone & Western RR on 2/9/1899, giving them access to Hawkinsville and four more connections, the Macon, Dublin & Savanah at Dublin, the Georgia Southern & Florida at Empire, and the Hawkinsville & Florida Southern at Hawkinsville.
The last link in the W&TRR chain was made in 1907, when they acquired the Dublin & Southwestern RR, that operated 28.5 miles from Dublin to Eastman, Ga, connecting with the GS&F at that point.
In 1941 they abandoned the trackage between Dublin and Hawkinsville and Dublin and Eastman, leaving the original mainline intact between Tennille and Dublin. This trackage from this point on was operated by the Central of Georgia until 1962 when it was finally absorbed into the Southern Ry. The last steam engine was the 223, an ex Central of Georgia engine that was scrapped in 1962, but I have failed in finding out any information on the lone diesel locomotive they acquired in 1954.
